Soccer Fitness Test

Soccer Fitness Test

Soccer fitness is the an extremely important requirement for a soccer player. Watching the growing importance of skills and fitness, European and Latin American soccer clubs are giving more stress to fitness tests of their players. In addition to regular practice, aerobic and anaerobic exercises are necessary for improving the strength, stamina, and techniques necessary to control the ball.

Based on the guidelines followed by the coach and fitness expert, the soccer players have to go through several fitness tests before any national or international match. The Select Test is a common fitness test used by the international soccer clubs to select primary players for a soccer match. The test includes Aerobic Testing Procedures, Multistage Shuttle Run Test Procedure, Anaerobic Testing Procedures, and Strength Testing Procedures.

Aerobic testing is the primary fitness test that estimates and improves the delivery rate of the oxygen to the muscles. The multistage shuttle run procedure is another fitness test that improves the muscle strength and helps the players to move quickly in the field. This test is performed in a 20 meter course. Players are required to cover this distance at a specified time. The anaerobic testing procedure helps the team management to identify the strikers and midfielders. Strikers and midfielders are required to do a great deal of sprinting during a game. The skill is developed among the players in a 15 meter sprint distance. This testing is also helpful for defenders. The strength testing procedure is used to determine the muscle strength of the players. In addition to skill, strength is also important for a defender or striker.

The shuttle run is also known as the beep test and is considered the ultimate fitness test. This test measures the fitness and flexibility of each player. It has been observed that soccer players suffer from hamstring problems. The sit and reach test is a unique fitness test that will make the hamstring muscle more flexible. This fitness test is a great help for strikers and midfielders who use their hamstring muscles to take powerful shots.

The vertical jump test is another fitness test and is used to determine the leg power of the players. The spot jump is used to head the ball into the net or to redirect it to other direction. Whether the player is a striker or a defender, the vertical jump test is important. Soccer is a game where players need skill as well as speed. Since players are required to run continuously for about 90 minutes, a fitness test like the sprint test is used to measure the player's speed.

The 505 agility test is a fitness test that improves flexibility and quickness. This fitness test measures the player's skill to change direction in 90 or 180 degrees. The 505 agility test is necessary for defenders, midfielders, strikers, and even goalkeepers.

The objectives of fitness tests are:

  • Improving physical stamina and mental strength
  • Monitoring the effect of treatment for injured player
  • Improving skills and performance levels
  • Identifying a player for a specific position (defense, midfield, forward, or goal line)
